Singularities

The Fort of Graça is considered as a fortification masterpiece on which the art completely ran out. Its construction presented a series of singularities as consequence of the splendid resolution of several constrains such as:

  • exiguity of space;
  • existence of rocky outcrops;
  • the need to harbor a great number of men, weaponry and logistics..

Considering this point of view, it is possible to list the particularities:

  • remarkable symmetry on the design and footprint (which favored the defensive capacity)
  • the use of underground spaces of the works;;
  • the use of its own esplanade modulation, by its height (it is not possible to see the fort by the enemy);
  • by the materiality of the construction (masonry of great quality, by it thickness, etc.) and most of all, by the geometrical option of the fronts, by the Second French System of Pagan, regardless of the fact that it had already been used in the Fort of Santa Luzia, with obtuse flank angles and shallow defense lines, without secondary flanks, which resulted in an authentic and singular defensive sophistication.

A fortification system is complex and it should integrate every mentioned detail, combined with a sublime rationality of the design, even with such adverse construction conditions, which bestowed the title of a “unmatched-work” of its period and lasted throughout time until nowadays, transmitting the same impression of monumentality.
